Viña Ruda is a young and modern project located in Tomelloso (Ciudad Real) that perfectly combines tradition and modern technology to create quality wines, showing that in La Mancha is also possible to produce quality wines. This is one of those projects that shows you that La Mancha, with a long wine tradition, want to dissociate from what until recently was the region: bulk wine and uncertain quality. Nothing to do with this small and ambitious winery just two hours away from the capital of Madrid. They have 15 hectares of vineyards where they get the best raw materials and combine modernity and tradition in each of their wines.
In Viña Ruda they farm like they would did their grandparents, like they would do in the beginning of the XXth century, harvesting the grapes by hand and using the method of cabañuelas (an ancient method for predicting the year).
What stands out about this winery may not be the finish of their wines with a delicious fruit on the palate and very floral aromas in their white wines with wood well integrated: first surprise is that umbrella that it is the first thing you see, standing out from the rest of the bottles. When we first met Casual (their young white wine made from Airen grapes – the most common white grape in the area and the most cultivated in Spain) with the image of a flowery umbrella, we could not wait long to taste it. We did a winery tour and met this project closely. They are wines with style, to enjoy and have fun, to share and to take it with virtually all our Mediterranean diet.
This is a good example of how to do things with care and quality. The quality is not at odds with the price and so our friends from Viña Ruda showed us and we could prove it ourselves that day last January (2015).
