Last month Guía Peñín – Spanish most popular wine & spirits guide- invited us to their V Premium Spirits Salon. This is one of those events that you don’t want to miss if you want to know what are the trendiest and coolest spirits and cocktails in the Spanish market.

This year we were more rushed for time and had no chance to try everything, but in events like these, which are increasingly popular and important in the industry, it is always quite difficult to visit each booth present.

So here you have a little resume of whiskies, cognacs, liquors and gins we had the chance to taste. We also introduced you a little distillery from Jerez that elaborates brandy. I am sure you will be surprised.

Pierre Ferrand 1840 Original. 93 points. (Cognac)

Yellow gold-amber colour. In the nose attacks with notes of dried flowers, vanilla, toasted with touch of honey and citrus. Fine and elegant. In the palate is delicious, sweet, very well-balanced and full bodied. Perfect to use in cocktails.

Gordon & Macphail Old Pulteney 8 years. North Highland. 90 points. (Whisky)

In the nose attacks with notes of Wood and sweet wine, pencil, wax crayon – turf,smoked meat. In the palate is oily, with a touch of wood and sweet. Bit invasive mouth with his salty to the endpoint.

Very salty. It’s like drinking a whisky at the beach but without the high temperatures. Honey and vanilla notes.  Explodes on the tongue, very salty, quite bitter, more fruity and less wood

Gordon & Macphail Benromach 10 years Old Speyside. 93 points.

Honey colour. In the nose attacks with candy and honey notes, turf. It’s like a Pedro X. In the palate is very smoked with a salty touch. Really nice. Fine in the palate.

Coeur de Lion Reserve, Pays d’Auge. 94 points. Calvados.

Yellow gold colour with greenish hues. In the nose attacks with pippin (apple) and caramel notes. Perfect to have after a meal, for table talk.

Abelha Silver Cachaça. 94 points. Cachaça (Organic Brazilian sugar cane liquor).

This is perfect to add at any cocktail. In the nose attacks with sugar cane and honey notes.it’s quite oily in the palate. It’s smooth in the beginning but it turns very structured and full bodied through all its way I the palate.

Abelha Gold Cachaça. 92 points. Cachaça.

In the nose attacks with tropical and honey notes, beach sand with touch of citrus. In the palate is more powerful with a sweet touch. Fine and more elegant.

Vermouth Reserve Carlo Alberto. 92 points.

Italian vermouth. Red, white and Extra dry.
Italian vermouth. Red, white and Extra dry.

Creamy with toasted notes and caramel in the nose and palate. Well balanced and very sweet. Perfect for a Sunday appetizer.

Vermouth are elaborated with rectified wines adding aromatic herbs but this winery selects the best wines to produce this vermouth.

Di Carlo Bianco is more balsamic with moscatel grape notes and slightly touch of caramel.

In the palate is a a bit more bitter but creamy, like a lemon candy. Very well balanced. With ice-cubes is going to be superb.

Pierre Ferrand 10 years 1er Cru. Ambre. 93 points. Cognac. 

It has hints of prunes, licorice, roasted, caramel, vanilla. To drink with no rush.

The palate is elegant, with a touch of candy, pefect combination between wood and sweet notes. To enjoy with no rush. Highly recommended.

One of the gins we had the chance to taste was M5 (93 points), one of which we missed last year, and we were delighted we had finally the chance to taste it. Classic gin, delicious and perfect for a Spanish gintonic now that good temperatures comes.

At the same boot, we could taste some delicious liquors. Chocolate Cream liquor (90 puntos) and Coffee Cream liquor (90 points) elaborated in Logroño (La Rioja). Both were delicious with a real taste of chocolate and toffee. Really nice and suitable for table talk.

Without a doubt one of the brands that surprised us was a very original gin, smooth, with different flavours and very suitable for ladies, like us. Stunning.

Sikkim Privée. 93 points.  Distilled n Manchester (UK) and black tea is infused.

It is very elegant with citrus notes, very smooth. Wonderfully smooth and elegant. With touch of tea.

Sikkim Bilberry. 90 points.

The natural color comes from the infusion with red berries. In the palate has red berries, strawberry and raspberry notes. Very well balanced and sweet.

And last but not least, I have the pleasure to introduce you Roberto Amillo Colección (96 points) some delicious Brandy from Jerez (Cadiz) that surprise not only for its beautiful bale but also because it is modern and different to what you normally see in the market. The insdide I can assure you, it is a delicious as it looks.

Toasted, caramel and toasted notes. Creamy in the nose. In the palate won’t disappoint you. Creamy, tasty and toasted.
